Skip permits in Chichester

If your skip has to go on the road, pavement or a grass verge in Chichester, you need a skip licence from West Sussex County Council. Tell us when you book and we'll apply for it. The council's fee is added to your order, and it can take a few working days, so book early if you can.

A skip on the road also needs safety lights and cones at night; you can get these from a local hire shop. If there's room on your drive or land, you don't need a permit at all.

Skip hire in Chichester: questions

What can't go in a skip?

We can't take these in our skips:

  • Fridges and freezers
  • Tyres
  • Large tree roots (over 0.5m across)
  • Gas bottles
  • Batteries
  • Electrical items
  • Hazardous waste such as asbestos
  • Paint tins that aren't empty
  • Tarmac

Plasterboard has to be kept separate from other waste, so ask us for a plasterboard-only skip. See our guide: what can go in a skip.

How long can I keep the skip?

Our standard hire is 7 working days. Online bookings can be for up to 14 days. If you need longer, just ask: depending on demand we can often extend it.

My drive is narrow. Can I still have a skip?

Our skip lorries are 2.7 metres wide, so we need a gap of at least 3 metres. If the lorry has to turn to reach the spot, allow room for that too. Not sure? Send us a photo and we'll tell you.

Can I fill the skip to the top?

Load it level with the sides, never above. We can't legally carry an overloaded skip, so the driver will ask you to take some out before it can be collected.

Do I need a permit?

Only if the skip goes on the road, pavement or a grass verge. The permit comes from West Sussex County Council, and we apply for it for you: just tell us when you book. On a road, the skip also needs safety lights and cones at night; you can get these from a local hire shop. More about skip permits.
